Introduction

The new versions (W4H 4.21 & W4H 5.01) of the weight-for-height programme were launched, at The Fourth International Conference on Eating Disorders in April 1999. The original version, W4H 3.0 UK was launched at the Third International Conference on Eating Disorders in 1997. The two new versions W4H 4.21 UK and W4H 5.01 UK, of which the later is a Psion version, both have more flexibility and scope, which aims to provide an even better facility than the previous version W4H 3.0 UK.

The development of a computer based solution using Microsoft Excel spreadsheet solutions, which allow for accurate and fast calculation with instant graphical representations for an ongoing period. The programmes have already proved to be extremely useful in clinical settings where regular weekly updates on weight factor are an important factor in clinical decisions.

The W4H programmes were developed to complement Cole's Growth Assessment Slide-Rule and child growth charts, which have been invaluable in the clinical assessment and treatment of seriously over- and underweight children and young people.

Each programme has the same basic features with slight variations through the versions.

  1. Weight and Height can be entered, which leads to an instant calculation of the weight-for-height ratio. Version W4H 4.21 UK and W4H 5.01 UK - has the ability of viewing all the entries, but version W4H 3.0 UK only allows you to view the most recent entries unless you go through a process of recalling previous entries.
  2. Weight, Height, and Body Mass Index (BMI) centiles - this age standardised information indicates the extremity according to peers - available on all versions.
  3. Body Mass Index (BMI) Score automatically calculated - only available on Version W4H 4.21 and W4H 5.01 UK.
  4. Individual records can be built up and amendments made for each case.
  5. Graphical representation - charts of weight against weight-for-height, and weight against weight centiles, are automatically generated and updated with sequential entries.
The new versions have so far proved successful for both detailed assessments and monitoring physical progress during treatment. The advantage with the new versions is the ability to view every entry detail (i.e. date, weight, height, BMI, Weight centile and W4H ratio) on one page, thus making reference to particular periods over the treatment process readily available.
